ROLE OF THE MINISTRY OF TOURISM AND CULTURE

The Ministry of Tourism and Culture is headed by a cabinet Minister who is appointed by His Excellency the President of Republic of The Gambia. The Minister is supported by a Permanent Secretary and Deputy along with other cadre staff responsible for policy matters of Tourism. The principal technical adviser to the Minister is the Permanent Secretary, administrative authority. The Permanent Secretary is assisted by the Deputy Permanent Secretary who is in-charge of staff matters. In addition, the other members of staff of the ministry include the Principal Assistant Secretary, the Senior Assistant Secretary, the Assistant Secretary and Director of Planning.

The Ministry of Tourism and Culture is responsible for national policy formulation and strategic planning, on Tourism and Culture matters. In addition to this core role, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture is also responsible for:

  • Promulgation of legislation in the tourism and cultural sectors.
  • Advising the executive on matters of Tourism and Culture.
  • Human resource development at the Ministry and satellite institutions.
  • Acting as a liaison with other government agencies, international donor agencies, the private sector and NGOs on matters relating to tourism and culture. In this vein, the various line agencies of the Ministry of Tourism & Culture, namely The Gambia Tourism Board (GTBoard), The National Centre for Arts & Culture (NCAC) and Gambia Tourism and Hospitality Institute (GTHI) are tasked with certain functions in line with their various core responsibilities and mandate.
  • Monitoring of the performance of the Tourism sector, including the industry and the satellite institutions.
  • Ensuring effective governance at the level of satellite institutions.

The government of the Gambia recognizes the important role tourism plays in the economy Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and creation of 35,000 direct and 35,000 indirect jobs with contributions of $85 million in foreign exchange, earnings (2013).
